Different Ways, Same Result in Chippewa Sweep Over EMU

MOUNT PLEASANT - It was a squeaker in game one and a rout in game two as the Central Michigan University softball team swept visiting Eastern Michigan in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the CMU Softball Complex.
The Chippewas (10-7, 4-0 MAC) won the opener, 1-0 in a 10-inning pitchers' duel, before running away with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. Eastern Michigan falls to 6-9, 3-3 in the MAC. The two teams will play a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
On a day that featured wind gusts in excess of 25 miles per hour blowing straight in, neither team was able to get anything going offensively in game one of CMU's home opener.
Jessica Garvin tossed the shutout while scattering five hits, fanning nine and walking one.
CMU broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 10th when replacement designated player Angie Hunter led the inning off with a single up the middle. She was pinch ran for by Chivon Kloepfer who was sacrified to second by Stephanie Crews. Kloepfer went to third on a Christan Dhondt ground out and scored on a Karen Hohs single up the middle.
Aimee Woodrum took the loss for EMU allowing seven hits while striking out seven. She went the distance and walked just one.
Linsey Calme was 3-for-4 in game one with two doubles.
CMU then found its bats in game two pounding out 11 hits. The Chippewas notched six doubles in the game and three of those batters scored.
The Chippewas tallied runs in each of the first three innings and led 4-0 after three. Eastern scored its only run of the game in the fourth but the Chippewas added two unearned runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to cruise to the win.
Christin Sobeck drove in the game's first two runs with a two-run double down the line in left. Brittany Decker, Jacque Benedict and Stephanie Crews each had two hits in the game while Hohs, Calme, Crews and Dhondt all drove in runs. CMU also scored on a double steal.
Jill DeRoche held the Eagles to just five hits as she picked up her second straight win. She struck out three.
Starter Nikki Denman took the loss for EMU making it through just one and a third innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Krissy Threet came on in relief and gave up seven hits and four runs.
Calme finished the day 4-for-5 and she was walked three times in game two. Benedict was 3-for-8 and Dhondt had a double in each game.
