KALAMAZOO -- Weather didn't fully cancel the weekend series between Central Michigan University and rival Western Michigan as the two teams were able to split a doubleheader on Monday at Ebert Field in Kalamazoo after Saturday and Sunday's action was postponed.
The Chippewas (21-11, 11-3 Mid-American) capitalized on seven Bronco errors in game one for a 7-2 victory and then WMU (15-21, 10-7 Mid-American) won the nightcap, 3-2. However, CMU is protesting game two because of a ruling on a play that could have ended the contest in the bottom of the seventh with the Chippewas leading, 2-1.
In the nightcap, sophomore Lindsey Calme belted a two-run homer in the sixth to give the Chippewas a 2-0 lead. The Broncos then scored a run in the bottom of the seventh off CMU pitcher Jessica Garvin and WMU continued to load the bases with two outs. Connie Kolokithas hit a grounder to the right side of the field where the ball struck base runner WMU Becky Bartosz who was going from first to second on the play. The umpire judged that no player had a play on the ball so the runner was not called out for the third and final out of the game. CMU and head coach Margo Jonker are protesting that ruling arguing that the fielder at second base could have made a play on the ball.
WMU scored a run on the play in question to tie the game and Katie Niemi followed that with an RBI single to left field that plated a third run for the Broncos.
Garvin (11-6) takes the loss in game two, allowing six hits and three runs, but all the runs were unearned after a fielding error by CMU. She struck out five and walked three.
WMU's Krysten Shumaker (2-0) earned the win fanning 15 Chippewas while allowing three hits.
Calme's homer, her first of the season, came with two outs in the sixth and it scored Brittany Decker who walked earlier in the inning.
Freshman Amy Hudson notched CMU's other two hits with a 2-for-3 performance.
The Chippewas took the opener thanks to seven WMU errors and seven unanswered runs after the Broncos took a 2-0 lead after the second inning.
CMU tallied a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth, another in the sixth and then three in the seventh on nine hits in the game.
Jill DeRoche (8-2) earned the win going the distance and giving up seven hits while striking out six. Tricia VanDerSlik (8-13) took the loss for the Broncos but only two of CMU's seven runs were earned.
Western loaded the bases in each of the first two innings while stranding five runners in the opening frames. The Broncos were able to push across two runs in the second thanks to three hits and a two-run single by Katie Niemi.
CMU used two hits, including a leadoff double by Christin Sobeck to score the run in the fourth. Sobeck went to third on a Dhondt single and scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Chivon Kloepfer as Sobeck beat the Broncos' throw home. Calme had an RBI single to tie it at two in the fifth and then Sobeck drove in a run with a fielder's choice RBI a batter later.
Jacque Benedict drove in CMU's run in the sixth and then three WMU errors in the seventh allowed the Chippewas to tack three more runs on the board. Kloepfer added another RBI on a single and two runs crossed on an error.
Benedict was the only Chippewa with a multi-hit game in the opener as she was 2-for-4 while Kloepfer drove in two runs.
CMU now hosts Miami on Wednesday, April 27, for a doubleheader that pits the two preseason MAC divisional favorites. First pitch at the CMU Softball Complex is set for 2 p.m.
