CMU Drops Two at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Central Michigan University's defense of its Mid-American Conference baseball title got off to a rough start here this weekend.
The Chippewas dropped both ends of a doubleheader here Sunday, losing 9-8 in 10 innings and 8-5. CMU is now 15-10 for the season and 0-3 in MAC action. BG is 17-6 and 3-3.
CMU blew three leads in the first game and lost in the 10th on Andy Hudak's double to right.
The Chippewas held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth and were still on top, 4-2, entering the bottom of the seventh. BG scored three times for a 5-4 lead. CMU scored three runs of its own in the eighth to go ahead, 7-5, only to have the Falcons score two in the ninth to force extra innings.
Once again, CMU scored for an 8-7 lead but BG scored twice to win it.
Jayson Ruhlman went the first five innings, scattering six hits and giving up two runs (both earned). He also walked four and fanned eight.
Ruhlman left leading 3-2 but the Chippewa bullpen was unable to maintain the edge. Mark Lundquist gave up three earned runs in one and two-third innings followed by James Ricchio who gave up two runs in one and one-third frames. The loser, Nathan Pung, went the final one and one-third innings and gave up two runs.
J.T.Jones led CMU with three hits and two RBI while Jim Geldhof had one hit and three RBI. Kurtis Wells added three hits and Troy Moratti and Ryan Peel two each.
In the nightcap, the Chippewas once again jumped out to a lead but couldn't hold on.
CMU staked Jason Cairns to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third. However, BG scored three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to chase Cairns. He went four and one-third innings, allowing seven runs (four were earned) while walking five and striking out three.
Josh Collmenter went the final three and two-third innings. He allowed two hits and one run with no walks and four strikeouts.
Wells had two hits and two RBI while David Latour and Geldhof had two hits. Bryan Mitzel slugged a solo homer for CMU.
The Chippewas return home on Tuesday for a non-league game against IPFW at 3 p.m.
