MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University managed just five hits here Tuesday afternoon but took advantage of nine walks en route to a 5-1 non-league baseball win over IPFW.
The Chippewas are now 16-10 for the season while the Mastadons fall to 11-9. CMU returns to action at the University of Michigan on Wednesday with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
The Chippewas trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth and hadn't had a base hit off IPFW lefty Jake Hollander. However, Brian Campbell reached to open the inning on Holander's fifth walk of the game, moved to third on J.T. Jones single and scored on a suicide squeeze by Jim Geldhof. Jones then scored on Moratti's sharp single to right.
CMU added a run in the seventh when Jones walked, stole second and scored on Bryan Mitzel's single to right.
The Chippewas wrapped up their scoring in the eighth when David Latour Jr. opened with a pinch hit homer to left center. Ryan Peel was then hit by a pitch and later scored on Moratti's bases-loaded walk.
Freshman Josh Ruhlman started for CMU and went three and one-third innings, allowing five hits and a run in the fourth.
Sophomore Mike Kirschenheiter allowed just one hit over the next three and two-third innings to get the win and even his record at 1-1. He walked one and whiffed three.
Picking up the save with two scoreless innings of relief was junior Mark Lundquist. He gave up two hits, walked one and struck out three.
Jones was the only Chippewa with two hits. Ryan Steinbach and Tyler Fowler had two for the Mastadons.
