Chippewas Roll to Eighth Straight Win

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University ran its baseball winning streak to eight straight here Wednesday afternoon with a 20-2 triumph over Concordia University.
The Chippewas are now 32-15 for the season while the visiting Cardinals close the campaign with an 18-28 mark.
CMU broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs each in the fifth and sixth and a season-high 11 runs in the seventh for the run-away win.
Redshirt freshman Andy Wingert picked up the victory, going the first five innings and allowing one earned run. He walked one and struck out eight in raising his record to 2-0.
Freshman Josh Ruhlman went the next three frames and didn't allow a hit or a walk. He did strike out six. Senior Nathan Pung went the final inning, giving up a run on three walks and a hit.
CMU pounded four Cardinal hurlers for 17 hits. Senior Kurtis Wells led the way with three hits and three RBI. Included in his hits were a pair of doubles, giving him 21 for the season -- a CMU record.
Junior Troy Moratti had two hits, one a grand slam homer in the sixth. Frosh Noah Lankford was the only other Chippewa with two hits.
A total of 21 players saw action for CMU.
Concordia was led by Mackenzie Matthews and Jon Sharon with two safeties each.
The starter and loser for the Cardinals was Carl McDevitt (4-6). He went the first five and one-third innings and gave up nine earned runs on 11 hits. He walked one and whiffed three.
The Chippewas are at Buffalo this weekend for a three-game Mid-American Conference series. The first game is set for Friday at 3 p.m.
