BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Kurtis Wells made sure the Central Michigan University winning streak in Mid-American Conference play would reach 12 here Sunday afternoon.
The 6-5 senior from Grand Rapids slugged two homers and drove in five runs in leading the Chippewas to a 12-5 win over the University at Buffalo.
The win improved CMU's record to 35-15 for the season and 15-6 in MAC action while the Bulls drop to 15-30-1 and 2-14-1.
Wells slugged a three-run homer in CMU's five-run first inning and then added a two-run shot in the three-run second. Both were blasts to center of more than 400 feet.
Wells now has six homers and 51 RBI this season.
Senior shortstop Ryan Peel added a two-run single in the first as the Chippewas staked starter Jason Cairns an 8-0 lead after two frames.
CMU made it 10-1 with two more in the fifth and closed it out with solo runs in the seventh and ninth.
Cairns went the first seven innings to raise his record to 6-5. He scattered eight hits and allowed three earned runs while walking four and striking out three. James Ricchio tossed a scoreless eighth but reliever Nathan Pung was touched for two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Junior Troy Moratti collected four hits for the Chippewas with Jim Geldhof and Ryan Peel chipping in with three each. Bryan Mitzel joined Wells with two apiece.
Matt Johnson was the starter and loser for the Bulls. He went just one and one-third innings, allowing seven earned runs. Shane Wolf was effective in relief for UB, going six and two-third innings and giving up four runs, two of them earned.
CMU has a pair of non-league games this week -- home with Michigan State on Tuesday and at Oakland on Wednesday -- before closing the regular season with three home games against Eastern Michigan beginning Friday.
