MOUNT PLEASANT - A penalty shot goal midway through the first half was the only offense in a 1-0 win for the Cincinnati Bearcats over the Central Michigan University women's soccer team this afternoon at the CMU Soccer Complex. The Chippewas were shut out for the second consecutive match and dropped their third straight overall, falling to 1-3-1 on the season.
Junior goalkeeper Anne Decker played brilliantly, making several excellent saves to keep her team in the game, but her offense couldn't find the net. CMU managed only one shot on goal in the match.
"Anne played at a high level today and was very aggressive on corner kicks and challenging the two breakaway opportunities Cincinnati had," head coach Tony DiTucci said. "Today was probably her best showing of the season in goal for us."
Cincinnati's goal came after a handball was called in the box in the 27th minute, giving the Bearcats' Kate Norton the penalty kick that was converted for the only tally of the match. It was Norton's first goal of the season.
"I was pleased with the way we played defensively today," DiTucci said. "Offensively, we generated several chances but we weren't able to get shots on goal. We had several balls that were played into the box and went through without any of our players getting shots off. We have to do a better job of playing with a sense of urgency up front."
CMU's next match will be on Friday, Sept. 16 when it travels to Evanston, Illinois to face Northwestern. The match starts at 4 p.m. CDT.
