MOUNT PLEASANT - No. 8-ranked Michigan scored two first half goals and the Central Michigan University offense was blanked on Tuesday afternoon as the Wolverines notched a 2-0 victory at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
The loss marked the first time the Chippewas were shut out this season as forward Alicia Balanesi was held without a goal for the first time on the year.
"We played well for the first 10 minutes but when Michigan scored it really took something out of us," coach Cristy Freese said. "I hope the team isn't satisfied that we only lost 2-0 (CMU lost to Michigan, 11-0, last year). I was disappointed in our effort. We just weren't sharp."
Michigan scored in the 10th minute when a penalty corner set up a Jill Civic goal off a Kara Lentz assist. The Wolverines' leading scorer, Katie Morris, then drove in another tally in the 35th minute off another penalty corner.
Each team had 11 penalty corners but CMU couldn't muster any offense from them.
"Both teams really struggled with the penalty corners in the first half," Freese said. "I think it had something to do with the brand new game balls, the heat and the humidity. We switched the balls at the half and that seemed to help, but I've never seen the turf that sticky before."
Michigan notched 10 shots to the Chippewas' eight. Beth Riley made six saves in the cage for Michigan while Danielle Frank made four and allowed both goals.
Erica Takach led CMU's offensive attack with a pair of shots.
The Chippewas will look to get back in the win column this Friday in Ann Arbor when they face Vermont (2-4, 0-0 America East) in a neutral-site affair. Match time is 3 p.m. at Ocker Field.
