MOUNT PLEASANT - A defensive showcase by the Central Michigan University field hockey team earned the Chippewas their first Mid-American Conference win, 4-0, in the conference opener against Missouri State. CMU has now won four of its last five MAC openers and improves to 4-3, 1-0 in the MAC. The Bears fall to 0-7, 0-1 in the MAC.
"We played a complete game and executed well," coach Cristy Freese said. "I was pleased how we played both offensively and defensively, but we got a little sloppy at the end of the game."
On the defensive end, Chippewa goalkeeper Danielle Frank recorded her first shutout of the season after making nine saves. Frank's dominant performance was her sixth career shutout.

"Danielle had her best game of the season not just because she had a shutout, but because of all the tough saves she made," Freese said.
Frank was not the only Chippewa to make a save in the net, as back Kim Ferris recorded a defensive save as well. Ferris also contributed offensively by scoring her second career goal in the 33rd minute, the second goal of the match for CMU.
"Kim was excited to score her second (career) goal," Freese said. "She did exactly what she is supposed to do on that play."
Kelly Jordan notched CMU's first goal at 21:20, the first of her two goals in the match. Jordan tipped the goal off a Samantha Sandham assist. The second Chippewa goal came from Ferris as she blasted the shot from 25 feet past Bear goalkeeper Kim Kinsella in the 33rd minute.
Alisa Folk scored her fifth goal of the season at the 37:29 mark from an Erica Takach assist. Takach now has a team high six assists. Jordan's second goal, at 48:39, rounded out the scoring.
"Kelly is doing well (with all her scoring)," Freese said. "She is capable of scoring even more and we have high expectations of her, even as a freshman."
The Chippewa win was witnessed by former players on Alumni Weekend and Jane McNamara, a CMU women's athletics pioneer. McNamara spent 29 years in the Chippewa physical education department and coached field hockey from 1948 to 1970. She was inducted into the CMU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
"I was really pleased that we could recognize Jane because of what she has done for CMU athletics," Freese said. "Our players really appreciated having her at the game and respect all she has done for us."
