AKRON, Ohio - The Central Michigan University women's soccer team won its second consecutive Mid-American Conference match in come-from-behind fashion, erasing a 1-0 halftime deficit with two goals in the final 20 minutes to claim a 2-1 victory over the Akron Zips. Laura Gaesser scored in the 72nd minute to tie the contest, and Amber Delvecchio scored on a header off a corner kick in the 87th minute to provide the decisive strike for the Chippewas. CMU moves to 2-0-0 in the MAC and 3-5-1 overall with the victory.
"This weekend was a great first step for us," head coach Tony DiTucci said. "To be able to go on the road and come home with two wins is a great way to start the conference schedule. I believe that our success this weekend is in many ways the result of playing a difficult early season schedule. We learned to keep fighting and to believe in each other, and we saw that come out clearly this weekend in these two matches."
CMU dominated play throughout much of the game, outshooting Akron 16-4 and earning nine corner kicks to Akron's zero. CMU goalkeeper Anne Decker made three saves for her third win of the season in net for the Chippewas.
"We generated a lot of good offensive opportunities, and it's nice that we're playing with a sense of urgency to finish those chances up front," DiTucci said.
The Chippewas will now play four consecutive matches at the CMU Soccer Complex over the next two weekends. The first of those four matches is Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. against Kent State.
