CMU 31, WMU 7
CMU will make its first appearance in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game on Nov. 30. It is CMU’s first West Division title since the MAC began divisional play in 1997.
The win over Western Michigan secures the 2006 Michigan MAC championship for the Chippewas.
CMU is 6-0 in the MAC for the third time in program history. The Chippewas went on to win conference titles in 1979 and 1990, the only other times they started 6-0 in the MAC.
CMU is guaranteed of its first seven-win season since 1994.
The Chippewas have won 12 of their last 15 conference games dating back to the 2004 season finale.
CMU is 14-1-1 at home against Western Michigan since 1975.
CMU improves to 6-3 in night games at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Western Michigan turned the ball over three times on Friday night, compared to just once for CMU. In the past seven CMU-WMU matchups, the team with fewer turnovers is 6-1.
Daniel Bazuin’s two sacks against the Broncos boosted his career total to 33. He sits fourth in MAC history.
Damien Linson caught his 16th career touchdown pass against WMU, tying him for third all-time at CMU.
Dan LeFevour is now tied for second at CMU in single-season touchdown passes (18), fifth in total offense (2,380) and sixth in completions (170).
CMU is 6-0 when leading at halftime in 2006.
The seven points allowed by the Chippewas tie for the fewest allowed by the Chippewas this season. They also surrendered just seven points in an 18-7 win over Ball State. Since the start of the 1996 season, CMU has held just five opponents to fewer than points, winning all five contests.
Marcel Archer’s 70 rushing yards set a new career high. His three touchdowns are also a career high. He is the first CMU player since 2004 to rush for three touchdowns in a game.
The Chippewas are 14-5 under Brian Kelly when they score at least 24 points. CMU has hit the 24-point mark in 11 of its last 13 games overall, posting a 7-4 record in those contests.
CMU’s 24-point margin of victory is its largest over Western Michigan since a 34-6 decision in 1989. The Chippewas’ 31 points are the most against WMU since a 38-28 win in 1996, and the seven points are allowed are the fewest against WMU since the 34-6 win in 1989.
CMU scored on the third play from scrimmage when Dan LeFevour hit Damien Linson for a 53-yard touchdown. In 2000, when the Chippewas upset No. 27 Western Michigan, Derrick Vickers connected with Ira Gooch for a 77-yard score on the third snap from scrimmage.
