CMU 55, Buffalo 28
At 8-4 overall, 7-1 in the MAC, the Chippewas have recorded their most wins in a season since the 1994 MAC championship team finished 9-3 overall, 8-1 in the MAC.
The Chippewas clinched the outright MAC West Division title with the win.
CMU has won three straight regular season finales after having dropped four straight from 2000-03.
CMU’s 55 points are the most in a game since a 61-58, four-overtime loss to Eastern Michigan in 2004. It is the most points CMU has scored in regulation, and scored in a victory, since a 56-27 win over Ohio in 1986.
The 27-point margin of victory matches the largest of the Brian Kelly era for CMU. The Chippewas defeated Ohio, 37-10, at home in 2005. The 27-point margin is the largest on the road since a 47-0 win at Akron in 1994.
CMU is 7-1 against opponents from the MAC East Division under Brian Kelly. The Chippewas have won six straight against the East Division.
CMU is 4-3 on the road this season, the first time since 1989-90 that the Chippewas finished consecutive regular seasons with winning records on the road. The Chippewas are now 6-2 in MAC road games since the start of the 2005 season.
Tim Brazzel returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown. It is the first kickoff return for a score by a CMU player since Ira Gooch returned a kickoff 82 yards for a score against Toledo in 1999.
Three plays after the kickoff return, Brazzel blocked a Buffalo punt that led to the Chippewas’ second touchdown. It was CMU’s first blocked punt since the fourth quarter of the 2005 season finale at Ball State.
CMU matched its season high for points in a quarter with 21 in the opening period at Buffalo. The Chippewas then topped that with a 27-point second quarter against the Bulls.
Dan LeFevour threw three touchdown passes in the first half, tying the CMU single-season record for touchdown passes with 22. He is already alone in eighth place in career touchdown passes at CMU.
Dan LeFevour ranks third at CMU in single-season passing yards with 2,555. Chad Darnell holds the school record with 2,921 yards in 1996.
LeFevour is just three yards short of becoming the third player in CMU history to post 3,000 yards of total offense in a season. He enters the MAC Championship Game with 2,997 yards of offense, third-most in a season at CMU. Kent Smith amassed 3,242 yards of offense in 2005.
Bryan Anderson is now tied for third at CMU with 61 receptions this season. Reggie Allen holds the school record with 66 catches in 1996.
Five different players have at least four touchdown receptions for CMU in 2006. Bryan Anderson, Justin Gardner and Ontario Sneed have each caught five touchdown passes, while Damien Linson and Obed Cétoute both have four touchdown catches.
