Central Michigan Postgame Notes
Freshman quarterback Dan LeFevour set a new single-season record for touchdown passes with his 23rd of the year, a seven-yard toss to wide receiver Obed Cetoute in the first quarter.
Senior wide receiver Damien Linson moved into second place on the career receiving touchdown list with his 17th TD grab, a 71-yard scoring play in the second quarter.
Dan LeFevour’s 37-yard run in the second quarter tied for the fourth-longest run in MAC Championship Game history (Trinity Dawson, Toledo, 2002).
Linson had five catches for 145 yards in the first half.
LeFevour completed 14-of-19 passes for 223 yards and a pair of TD’s in the opening half.
CMU records broken during tonight’s game:
Total offense, season LeFevour, 3,319 yards (Kent Smith, 3,242 yards, 2005)
Touchdown passes, season LeFevour, 25 (Chad Darnell, 22 TD, 1996)
Receptions, season Bryan Anderson, 67 (Reggie Allen, 66 rec., 1996)
LeFevour had the second 300-yard passing game of his career, throwing for 314 yards on 22-of-30 passing with three touchdown passes. His career high was 360 yards at Kentucky on Sept. 30.
Ontario Sneed’s 96-yard touchdown run was the longest play in MAC Championship Game history (Randy Moss, Marshall, 86-yard touchdown catch from Chad Pennington, 1997).
CMU became just the second team in MAC Championship Game history with a 300-yard passer, a 100-yard rusher, and a 100-yard receiver: LeFevour, 314 yards passing; Sneed, 130 yards rushing; Linson, 191 yards receiving. The only previous team to accomplish this trifecta was Marshall in the inaugural championship game in 1997: Chad Pennington, 322 yards passing; Doug Chapman, 115 yards rushing; Randy Moss, 170 yards receiving.
MAC Championship Game records broken during tonight’s game:
Receiving yards Linson, 191 yards (Denero Marriott, Marshall, 179 yards, 2001)
Longest run Sneed, 96 yards (Chester Taylor, Toledo, 65 yards, 2001)
Yards per attempt, individual Sneed, 14.4, (9-130) (Franklin Wallace, Marshall, 8.3 (12-99), 2001)
Yards per attempt, team Central Michigan, 6.4 (Marshall, 5.7, 2001)
CMU’s top-ranked offense shredded Ohio’s top-ranked defense, putting up season-highs in several categories against the OU defense. The Chippewas’ 314 yards passing was the most allowed by OU this season, as were the three passing touchdowns CMU scored. CMU’s averages of 10.4 yards per pass and 9.0 yards per play both smashed through OU’s previous ceilings in those categories (7.6 per pass by Missouri and 6.8 per play by Northern Illinois). The 31 points matched the most scored by an OU opponent (Missouri) this season, as did CMU’s four sacks on Bobcat quarterbacks (Bowling Green).
Linson is the first receiver to top the 100-yard mark in a game against Ohio this year.
Linson’s 71-yard catch and Sneed’s 96-yard run are the two longest plays allowed by Ohio on the season.
Rick Albreski made four PAT’s today, giving him 44 for the season. He is one shy of CMU’s single season record of 45 (Casey Wilson, 1996).
Bryan Anderson now has 816 yards receiving in 2006, moving him into the top 10 on the single season yardage chart.
Freshman quarterback Dan LeFevour in the first signal-caller since Bowling Green’s Brian McClure in 1982 to lead his team to a MAC title.
CMU is now 1-1 at Ford Field.
The CMU defense held OU’s Kalvin McRae to 76 yards rushing, snapping his string of eight consecutive 100-yard rushing games.
This was the second straight meeting in which CMU held Ohio to only 10 points. The Chippewas beat OU 37-10 in Mount Pleasant last season.
