YPSILANTI - Despite its best effort of the season on the vault, the Central Michigan University gymnastics squad could not overcome mistakes on the other three events and fell to in-state rival Eastern Michigan tonight, 189.600-189.475. CMU drops to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference with the loss.
CMU opened the meet on the uneven bars, where it was led by freshman Brittany Logan who led off the rotation with what turned out to be a team-high of 9.550. Sheena Smith later added a 9.500, but the Chippewas had two routines with falls and were forced to count one of the low scores. CMU trailed by over a full point after the first rotation.
It rebounded on the vault, notching a season-best total of 48.600 as a team on the event. Senior Mattie Crawford tied her career high and won the vault with a 9.900, with Smith second at 9.775. No Chippewa scored less than a 9.625 on the vault. After two events, EMU's lead was slightly less than two-tenths of a point.
A week after a scintillating team performance of 49.125 on the floor exercise, CMU could not come close to matching those exploits, posting a team total of 46.850 at EMU. Danielle Espinoza's 9.750 was the highlight for the Chippewas on the event. However, thanks to EMU's problems on the balance beam, CMU held a slight lead of just under four-tenths of a point going into the final rotation.
CMU could not hold onto its lead on its final event, the balance beam, scoring 47.550 as a team. Sophomore Nicole Cherryhomes made her first collegiate appearance on the beam and posted an outstanding 9.650 to lead CMU on the event. Danielle Espinoza added a 9.625, but EMU totaled 48.050 on the floor to erase CMU's lead and win the meet by the slim margin of 0.125 points.
Jessica Neel competed in all four events for CMU and posted the top all-around score of the meet with a total of 38.075, edging out EMU's Rebecca Fuss (37.950).
CMU is back in action next Sunday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at Rose Arena with a MAC dual meet against Ball State.
