MOUNT PLEASANT - For the third time this season, a Central Michigan University gymnast was honored with an individual award as sophomore Danielle Espinoza was named the Mid-American Conference Specialist of the Week today. She joins teammates Jules Passy (Jan. 30) and Stephanie Langley (Feb. 6) as Chippewas to earn a conference honor in 2006.
Espinoza scored a career-best 9.875 to win the floor exercise and tied a career-high with a 9.800 to also claim the top spot on the balance beam. She added a 9.475 on the vault to help CMU rebound with a 192.375-186.800 win over Ball State. Espinoza has now posted four consecutive scores of 9.750 or better on the floor and her 9.875 ties for the best score in the MAC this season.
It's the first career conference award for Espinoza. She and the Chippewas will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m. when they host Kent State. CMU will then travel to Lincoln, Neb. to compete at the Masters Classic on Sunday, Feb. 26.
