TOLEDO, Ohio -- Both games between Central Michigan University and Toledo were decided in the late innings on Saturday at Scott Park.
The Rockets scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth for the opening game's only tally, before the Chippewas bounced back to take the nightcap, 4-3, in eight innings.
A doubleheader was played today because predicted bad weather threatened tomorrow's single game.
"We came out flat in game one and that was a concern after how well we played yesterday," coach Margo Jonker said. "We didn't adjust to the pitching. Toledo was on its game today and played extremely well.
"Ali Pettit did a nice job in relief in the second game and Brittany Decker is starting to display the power we knew she had."
The split gives CMU a 16-22 record on the year and a 7-5 MAC slate. Toledo is now 13-32, 4-11 in the MAC.
The Rockets' win in the opener snapped CMU's 24-game winning streak in the series.
Next up for CMU are eight straight home games, beginning with a non-conference single game against Michigan State on Wednesday, April 26. First pitch at the CMU Softball Complex is set for 4 p.m., and the game will be televised live throughout Michigan on Comcast Local.
Game One
Toledo 1, CMU 0
The Chippewas managed just two hits off starter Sierra Pereira as she notched a complete game shutout.
Toledo scored the game's only run in the bottom sixth thanks to two straight wild pitches with two outs.
Jill DeRoche (6-10) suffered the loss while giving up just three hits. She fanned one and walked two.
CMU had three fielding errors in the game.
Christan Dhondt and Stephanie Crews were the only Chippewas to notch hits.
Game Two
CMU 4, Toledo 3 (8 innings)
Lindsey Calme drove in the game-winning run in the top of the eighth on a suicide squeeze as CMU salvaged a split.
Christan Dhondt doubled to lead off the eighth and she was pinch ran for by Lynsey VanSweden. VanSweden went to second on a Katie Horvath walk and took third on a fielder's choice grounder by Stephanie Crews. Calme put down a bunt to score the run with one out and she was safe on error as the second baseman dropped the ball while covering first.
Ali Pettit (4-4) picked up the win in relief as she came on to finish the final four and two-thirds innings. She allowed five hits and one run while fanning four. Starter Jessica Garvin was pulled with one out in the fourth after putting two runners on base.
CMU took an early lead with a single run in the second on a first-and-third double steal. The Rockets responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth that were credited to Garvin.
The teams would answer each other as Brittany Decker homered to leadoff the fifth and Toledo countered with a pair of hits to push across a run in the bottom of the inning.
Calme tied the score again in the top of the sixth with an RBI single.
Calme finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Jacque Benedict was 2-for-2 before leaving the game with an injury.
The Rockets had nine hits to CMU's seven but Toledo had a pair of errors to the Chippewas' one.
Decker's homer in the fifth inning was her second in as many days. She now has nine in her career to rank ninth in CMU history.
