MOUNT PLEASANT - The pitching tandem of Ali Pettit and Jessica Garvin kept the Ball State Cardinals in check on Friday afternoon as Central Michigan University swept a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, 5-1 and 2-1.
The two Chippewa pitchers allowed just nine hits on the day while walking only one batter.
"Both of them pitched complete games and that was impressive," coach Margo Jonker said. "Garvin pitched a great game and we made Ball State earn its way on base. As long as we continue to do that, we'll be alright.
"I thought we had different people step up at different times and we need to just take it one hit at a time, one run at a time and one game at a time the rest of the season."
Pettit picked up the win in the opener while allowing just five hits and an unearned run. Garvin tossed a four-hitter in the nightcap while fanning four. It was her first complete game since March 11 against Illinois.
CMU improves to 18-23 overall and 9-5 in the MAC while the Cardinals drop to 12-25 overall, 5-11 in loop play.
The Chippewas now host Miami for single games on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
Game One
Central Michigan 5, Ball State 1
Making her first Mid-American Conference start, freshman Ali Pettit tossed a five-hitter allowing just an unearned run in CMU's 5-1 victory.
It was Pettit's first start since March 18 against Robert Morris and the win was her fifth straight (5-4).
She fanned three and walked one while getting five runs and eight hits worth of support from her teammates.
CMU jumped out with three unearned runs in the first inning. Lindsey Calme had a two-run double and Stephanie Crews followed with an RBI double as the Chippewas were rolling early.
CMU added another run in the fourth when Calme led the frame off with a single and pinch runner Katie Horvath scored for her on a single by freshman Kim Cozat.
Ball State got on the board with an unearned run in the fifth before Amy Hudson answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame.
Starter Amanda Pick (6-9) took the loss for Ball State and she was replaced by Abby Zollman in the sixth inning. Pick gave up all eight hits and only two of the five runs against her were earned. She stuck out three while Zollman fanned one and walked one.
Calme finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI and Hudson also notched a pair of hits.
Game Two
Central Michigan 2, Ball State 1
Jessica Garvin won the pitchers duel in game two as both of the game's hurlers allowed just four hits.
Ball State jumped out to an early lead with two first-inning doubles, the second by Katie Pilger which scored leadoff batter Kelli Jeziorski.
The Chippewas took advantage of a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning as Brittany Decker came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Amy Hudson.
Freshman Kim Cozat drove in the winning run in the fourth with an RBI single to the gap in right center that scored Stephanie Crews who doubled with one out.
Garvin (6-4) struck out four while allowing the one run in the first. She didn't walk anyone.
Abby Zollman (2-5) took the loss despite scattering four hits. She struck out three and walked three.
