MOUNT PLEASANT - Senior Karen Hohs broke a 1-1 tie with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning as Central Michigan University captured a 3-1 victory over Miami on Sunday afternoon.
"We didn't come through yesterday in a similar situation but Karen came through today," coach Margo Jonker said. "The Miami pitcher helped us out a little bit (two walks in the sixth) and we took advantage of that."
The win comes after CMU dropped a 4-3 decision to Miami on Saturday while stranding two runners in the bottom of the seventh.
The Chippewas won today despite posting just five hits to the RedHawks' nine.
Ali Pettit earned the win in relief for her fifth straight victory. She closed the final two and a third innings after coming on in the fifth with runners on first and second.
CMU took a 1-0 lead in the third when Christan Dhondt reached on a fielder's choice RBI grounder to first as Brittany Decker scored from third.
Miami used a two-out RBI single off starter Jill DeRoche to tie the score in the fifth and then she was pulled after giving up another single which put runners at first and second.
That's when Pettit came in and closed the door on Miami the rest of the way.
DeRoche gave up seven hits and one run while fanning seven, walking two and hitting one batter. Pettit allowed two hits in the final two and a third innings and she fanned two, including Breanna Robinson to end the game.
Miami's Courtney Salmon, who tossed a three-hitter and fanned 11 on Saturday, started for the RedHawks but she only made it through five complete innings. Kelly Cabana came on in relief and she was tagged for the loss after walking two and giving up the game-winning hit to Hohs. Melissa Kail faced CMU's final two batters, giving up a hit to Brittany Decker.
Amy Hudson tallied two hits for CMU while Robinson and Christine Bills both had a pair of hits for Miami.
CMU will have final exams this week before closing the regular season with games against Akron and Ohio on the weekend.
