MOUNT PLEASANT - Senior Jessica Garvin made her final appearance at the Central Michigan University Softball Complex a memorable one.
The pitcher from nearby Shepherd, Mich., threw a five-hit shutout against Ohio as the Chippewas notched a 6-0 win in the regular season finale. The shutout was Garvin's first of the season.
CMU is now 22-25 overall and finished 13-7 in Mid-American Conference play. The Chippewas were second in the MAC West Division and will be the No. 4 seed in this week's MAC Tournament. CMU faces No. 5 Eastern Michigan on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Despite losing, Ohio (26-38, 7-15 MAC) advanced to the MAC Tournament as the eighth seed thanks to Buffalo's 6-0 win over Miami.
The MAC Tournament is being held at Currie Stadium in Midland this Wednesday through Saturday, May 10-13. Admission is free.
"We wanted to finish the season with a win for the seniors and the program," coach Margo Jonker said. "We also thought it was important to set a tone heading into the MAC Tournament.
"It was a great outing for Jessica. She pitched a great game and I was happy that she finished her home career on that note."
Garvin (7-6) fanned three and walked one. She forced Ohio to strand eight runners in the game while keeping the Bobcats scoreless for their third straight contest.
CMU posted a three-spot in the third inning before adding one run in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Amy Hudson led CMU's offensive effort with a 3-for-3 outing. She has now hit safely in 10 straight games while improving her MAC-leading average to .414.
The Chippewas got to Ohio starter Candace Warden in the third as she gave up four hits in the frame. Suzie Giroux singled to start the inning and then Lindsey Calme had an RBI double and Stephanie Crews an RBI single. The third run of the stanza scored when Allie Hansen reached on error.
Hudson tacked on the single run in the fourth with an RBI double and CMU added a pair in the sixth thanks to a leadoff walk, sacrifice fly by senior Christan Dhondt and RBI single by Crews.
Crews finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Ohio went through three pitchers in the game as CMU pounded out nine hits. Both teams committed a pair of errors. Warden took the loss to drop to 6-12.
