MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University senior defensive end Daniel Bazuin (McBain, Mich./McBain HS) is one of 42 players named to the preseason watch list for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award.
Bazuin is now on the watch list of five major national awards. The other four to name him as a preseason candidate are: Bednarik Award, nation's outstanding defensive player; Nagurski Trophy, nation's top defensive player, Lombardi Award, nation's top lineman; and Lott Trophy, defensive player who also stands out in the classroom and community.
The Hendricks Award is named for former University of Miami (Fla.) great Ted Hendricks, college football's first three-time All-American. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame, Hendricks spent 15 seasons in the NFL and won four Super Bowl rings.
The 2005 Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Bazuin has earned preseason All-America second team recognition from The Sporting News and NationalChamps.net. He was a second team All-America pick by SI.com following a 2005 campaign that saw him establish new CMU single season records for sacks (16) and tackles for loss (26.5). His 16 sacks also tied the MAC single-season record.
Bazuin ranked first in Division I-A in tackles for loss, second in sacks and tied for fourth in forced fumbles (5) in 2005. He enters his senior season already holding CMU career records for sacks (25) and tackles for loss (48.5).
A two-time All-MAC first team selection, Bazuin also excels in the classroom. As a marketing major with a 3.39 grade-point average, Bazuin has twice been named to the Academic All-MAC squad and was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honoree in 2005.
CMU opens the 2006 season on Thursday, August 31, hosting Boston College at 6 p.m. ESPN2 will televise the contest to a national audience. Season tickets for the upcoming campaign are now available by calling 1-888-FIRE-UP-2.
