MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University head baseball coach Steve Jaksa has announced the addition of David Barkholz to the Chippewa coaching staff.
Barkholz comes to CMU from Defiance College, where he spent the 2006 season as a graduate assistant with the Yellow Jackets’ baseball program.
“Dave brings great knowledge and experience in the MAC to our program,” Jaksa said. “We’re excited to have him as a part of the Chippewa baseball family.”
Barkholz was a four-year letterman, and two-year team captain, for Bowling Green State University (2001-04), hitting .320 with 15 home runs in 160 career games. He earned a bachelor of science degree in education from BGSU in August 2005.
Barkholz began his coaching career while completing his coursework at Bowling Green. During the 2005 season, he worked with the Falcons’ outfielders and served as the first base coach. He also spent the 2004 season as the bench manager and hitting coach of the Blissfield (Mich.) American Legion team.
Barkholz filled a variety of roles during the 2006 season at Defiance, primarily serving as the hitting coach and outfield coach. Under his tutelage, the Yellow Jackets improved their team batting average from .234 in 2005 to .289 in 2006. Defiance produced 340 hits in 2006, compared with 234 in 2005, and increased its team totals in extra-base hits and runs scored.
CMU finished 35-23 overall, 17-9 in the Mid-American Conference in 2006. The Chippewas defeated eventual MAC Tournament champion Ball State twice on the regular season’s final weekend to claim the MAC West Division crown.
Cornstubble Named Co-Mr. Baseball
Incoming freshman catcher Dale Cornstubble (Homer, Mich./Homer HS) was recently named the co-recipient of Michigan’s Mr. Baseball award. He shared the honor with high school teammate Dan Holcomb.
Cornstubble hit a team-leading .495 and posted a 1.021 slugging percentage as a senior, driving in 50 runs and homering 12 times. He was a first team all-state selection as both a junior and senior.
At Homer, Cornstubble was part of a program that won a national high school record 75 consecutive games and collected state titles in 2004 and 2006. The Trojans won 113 of 115 games over his final three seasons.
