MOUNT PLEASANT – Josh Gordy’s 100-yard interception return for a touchdown highlighted Central Michigan University’s 24-21 Mid-American Conference win over Akron (1-2 overall, 0-1 MAC) on Saturday.
With the win, CMU (1-2, 1-0) extended its winning streak against defending conference divisional champs to three and moved into a tie for first in the MAC West Divison.
The Chippewas led 7-0 when Gordy stepped in front of Luke Getsy’s pass in the end zone in the final minute of the first half. He returned it untouched along the Chippewa sideline. One play earlier, CMU’s Calvin Hissong had intercepted Getsy at the CMU 18-yard line. Following review, however, it was determined that Hissong had been stripped of the ball as he fell to the ground and Akron was awarded possession at the 18-yard line with 23 seconds left in the half.
CMU stretched its lead to 21-0 on a 3-yard run by Victor Doman early in the third quarter. Doman’s rumble up the middle capped a 10-play, 86-yard scoring drive for the Chippewas. Dan LeFevour was 4-for-4 passing for 57 yards and ran for 15 yards on the drive.
Getsy and the Zips used instant replay to their advantage to get on the scoreboard late in the third period. A 16-yard pass to Jabari Arthur in traffic in the end zone initially was ruled incomplete. Replay, however, determined that Arthur had dragged one foot inbounds and the play was ruled a touchdown.
A 10-yard scoring toss from Getsy to David Harvey pulled Akron within 21-13 midway through the fourth quarter, but Matt Domonkos hooked the extra point wide left. The CMU offense responded by covering 71 yards on 14 plays and erasing 5:52 off the clock. Rick Albreski’s 28-yard field goal with 2:21 remaining extended the lead to 24-13.
Getsy hit Harvey for a second score, this one from 14 yards out on fourth-and-10, and ran for a two-point conversion to cut the margin to 24-21 with 11 seconds left. The Zips’ onside-kick attempt skipped out of bounds, however, and CMU erased the clock.
LeFevour finished 16-of-23 passing for 162 yards and a score. He also ran for a game-high 67 yards on 10 attempts. Bryan Anderson posted career highs of seven receptions for 95 yards.
Getsy, meanwhile, was 25-of-46 for 375 yards and three scores. He was also intercepted three times and sacked three times.
Arthur made eight catches for 137 yards, while Harvey hauled in five balls for 133 yards and two scores.
Defensively, Doug Kress led CMU with 10 tackles. Pacino Horne added nine and Hissong eight. Brion Stokes had a game-high 12 tackles for Akron.
CMU plays the first of three straight on the road next weekend, visiting Eastern Michigan at 3:30 p.m. Comcast Local will televise the contest live.
