2. ... improve to 2-1 all-time against the service academies.
3. ... have a three-game winning streak in three straight years for the first time since 1992-94.
4. ... ensure a winning record at home for the third time in the last four years.
The Matchup
Two teams riding two-game winning streaks collide this weekend when Army visits CMU. The Chippewas have won two straight Mid-American Conference contests to remain atop the MAC West Division standings, while Army has posted back-to-back wins for the first time since a four-game winning streak late in the 2005 season. Army is allowing 20.8 points and 373.3 yards of offense per game; CMU enters the contest averaging 31.3 points and 428.5 yards per game.
The Coaches
Butch Jones is in his first season as the head coach at CMU. A former assistant at CMU (1998-2004), Jones spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons as an assistant under Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia. He is one of 11 current head coaches in the MAC who is a first-time head coach.
Stan Brock is in his first season as the head coach at Army and his first season as a collegiate head coach. He spent three seasons (1997-99) as the head coach of the Portland Forest Dragons and two seasons (2000-01) as the head coach of the Los Angeles Avengers in the Arena Football League.
The Series
CMU and Army have met only one other time on the gridiron. The Chippewas claimed a 14-10 win in a driving rainstorm at Michie Stadium in 2005. Kent Smith scored on a 2-yard run with 6:54 remaining to put the Chippewas in front for good.
LeFevour Selected MAC West Offensive Player of the Week
Dan LeFevour was named MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week for his performance at Ball State. He accounted for a school-record 506 yards of total offense, the third-highest single-game total in MAC history, and threw a school record-tying five touchdown passes. LeFevour finished 30-of-38 passing for 360 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 146 yards and a score.
Offensive Explosion
The CMU offense put a dent in the school and Mid-American Conference record books with its 58-point, 658-yard outburst last Saturday at Ball State. Among the notable performances on Saturday:
The 658 yards of offense was a school record and the 11th-highest single-game total in MAC history.
Dan LeFevour accounted for 506 yards of offense (360 passing, 146 rushing), a school record and the third-highest single-game total in MAC history.
LeFevour tied a school record with five touchdown passes (Bill Kelly, 1929; Kent Smith, 2004).
LeFevour’s 146 rushing yards are the second-most in a game for a CMU quarterback (Erik Timpf, 147 yards at Michigan State in 1993).
The Chippewas’ 58 points were the most in a victory since a 63-14 win over Eastern Michigan in 1981. The 96 combined points were the most in regulation since CMU and Navy combined for 97 in the 2003 season finale.
Bryan Anderson matched a career high with 10 receptions and established a career high with 154 receiving yards. He also tied a career high with two touchdown grabs.
LeFevour Nears Career TD Mark
After throwing five touchdown passes last weekend, Dan LeFevour enters Saturday’s game against Army just one touchdown pass short of CMU’s all-time record. Jeff Bender is the current record holder with 38 career touchdown passes (1988-91). LeFevour enters this weekend’s game with 37 scoring tosses; he has thrown two or more touchdown passes 10 times in his career.
One More LeFevour Note
The sophomore signal-caller ranks ninth among Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks in rushing. He is averaging 56.7 ypg on the ground. La.-Lafayette’s Michael Desormeaux leads all FBS quarterbacks averaging 110.7 ypg rushing.
Count ’em Up
CMU’s 58 points at Ball State were tied for the most scored by a Football Bowl Subdivision team last weekend (Boise State defeated New Mexico State 58-0 on Sunday night) ... The Chippewas have scored 93 points the last two games (35 vs. Northern Illinois, 58 at Ball State) after tallying 95 points in the first four games combined ... CMU has scored 188 points in its first six games, the most since the 1994 Chippewas scored 194 points in their first six games.
CMU Hall of Fame Welcomes Six New Members
The six newest members of the CMU Athletic Hall of Fame will be recognized at halftime this weekend. The class includes Leonard Drake (men’s basketball, 1974-77); Brock Gutierrez (football, 1992-95); Angie (Henderson) Montroy (volleyball, 1982-85); Dick Kirchner (wrestling coach, 1957-64); Bill Taylor (men’s track and field/cross country, 1987-89); and Betsy Yonkman (women’s basketball, 1983-86).
Honorary Captains
The Football Alumni Club chooses honorary captains for each of CMU’s home games. Honorary captains this weekend are Lt. Col. John Cully and Norb Miller. Both served in the United States Army following graduation from CMU. Cully was a 27-year veteran of the army, while Miller completed a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Unbeaten Opponents
CMU’s three losses this season are to teams with a combined record of 15-1: Kansas (5-0), Purdue (5-1) and North Dakota State (5-0). Kansas is ranked 20th in this week’s Associated Press top 25, while North Dakota State is ranked first in the nation in the Football Championship Subdivision coaches poll.
BCA Gives CMU an A
The Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA) has given CMU a grade of “A” for the interview process that led to the hiring of Butch Jones as CMU’s head football coach in January. CMU was one of nine Football Bowl Subdivision schools to receive a grade of “A” for its hiring process last year. The BCA grades schools on five criteria: communication, hiring/search committee, candidates interviewed, duration of search and adherence to institutional affirmative action policies.
