MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University continued preparations for its Motor City Bowl matchup with Purdue with another 90-minute practice in the Indoor Athletic Complex on Friday.
Friday's workout, the fourth of bowl week, marked the midway point in the Chippewas' bowl preparations. CMU will practice four more times, including twice at Ford Field in Detroit, prior to Wednesday's Motor City Bowl. As CMU enters the home stretch of its preparation, head coach Butch Jones is pleased with the progress his team has made to this point.
"We had another good, spirited practice today," Jones said. "We put them through a lot of different competitive drills today and I thought our team competed well from start to finish."
After a team dinner, the players were given the rest of Friday evening off. The team will report for meetings early Saturday afternoon before returning to the practice field later Saturday.
Home Sweet Home: A Motor City Bowl record crowd of 54,113 turned out for CMU's 31-14 win over Middle Tennessee State in 2006. The 2007 Motor City Bowl will mark CMU's fourth appearance at Ford Field in Detroit in the past two seasons; the Chippewas have won three straight, all in front of partisan CMU crowds, at Ford Field.
"It's a privilege to play in the Motor City Bowl," Jones said. "We have a lot of players from Michigan so it's obviously special for them. Our fans don't have to travel far, and we have a large alumni and fan base in the Detroit area who I know are looking forward to the bowl game."
CMU has sold more than 11,000 tickets through its ticket office for next week's game.
Maroon and Gold Motor City: CMU has unleased a marketing campaign on the city of Detroit highlighting Chippewas who have succeeded both in the classroom and on the field. Dan LeFevour, Red Keith and Bryan Anderson are featured in billboards and other ads that will remain throughout the city through the month of January.
