MOUNT PLEASANT – The glittering performance of the Central Michigan University gymnastics team in Sunday’s 195.775-195.200 win over Kent State has earned two gymnasts Mid-American Conference honors, as freshman Katie Simon and senior Sheena Smith combined to sweep the weekly awards. Simon was named Gymnast of the Week, while Smith picked up Specialist of the Week accolades.
Simon, who earned the Gymnast of the Week honor for the second week in a row, starred at Kent State. She scored 39.375 to capture the all-around and help the Chippewas post their highest team score of the season. She notched career-highs on three events, scoring 9.925 on the floor exercise, 9.900 on vault, and 9.750 on balance beam, and she matched her career-high with a 9.800 on bars. Her floor total in the highest in the MAC this season, and her vault is second-best in the MAC on the year.
Smith reached a level not seen in the Mid-American Conference in three years, scoring a career-high 9.950 on the vault. She is the first MAC gymnast to score that high since former CMU standout Kara Reighard earned a 9.950 at the 2004 MAC Championships. Her vault helped CMU post a team total of 49.075 on vault, the best in the MAC this season. She added a strong 9.825 on uneven bars as CMU netted its best score of the season. It’s the second Specialist of the Week honor this season for Smith, who was previously recognized on Jan. 22.
CMU has now earned six weekly conference honors already in 2007. In addition to Simon and Smith, both Laura Rogers (Gymnast of the Week, Jan. 22) and Jules Passy (Gymnast of the Week, Feb. 12) have previously nabbed a MAC award this season.
The Chippewas are back in action this weekend, stepping out of conference for a triangular meet with No. 17-ranked Missouri and Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa. this Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m.
