Neel Named MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week

MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Michigan University gymnast Jessica Neel has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of March 16-22. It is her first conference academic award.
Neel scored a career-high 9.825 on the beam as CMU defeated Northern Illinois 193.500-192.175. It was the highest score for Neel in any event in her career. With the win, CMU improved its record in the Mid-American Conference to 4-1 and remained in the running to claim the top spot in the regular season standings and the first choice of competition order at the MAC Championships on March 31.
The sophomore from Fairborn, Ohio carries a 3.93 grade-point average as a finance major. She is the third Chippewa female to be named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week during the 2006-2007 seasons. The previous winners were cross country runner Amanda Rudert (Sept. 28) and volleyball player Mary Ochmanek (Oct. 26).
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
