MOUNT PLEASANT Bowling Green scored two runs before the Central Michigan University Chippewas could record an out and that quick start vaulted the Falcons to a 3-2 win on Sunday at the CMU Softball Complex.
The Chippewas (17-17, 5-5 Mid-American) came back to tie the score but BGSU (26-9, 9-5 Mid-American) used a pair of hits to tally the game-winning run in the top of the sixth.
Chippewa starter Ali Pettit didn’t make it out of the first inning as she surrendered three hits and the two early runs before being replaced by Jill DeRoche.
DeRoche came on and threw seven complete innings allowing four hits and one run while fanning eight.
“Jill pitched a great game,” coach Margo Jonker said. “Her ball was popping and she was outstanding today.
“BGSU hit the ball well and the Falcons came out and were banging the ball early. I’m happy we came back against a good team but it was unfortunate that we couldn’t get the win.”
CMU cut into the early 2-0 Falcon lead with an unearned run in the second. Lindsey Calme reached on an error and pinch runner Katie Horvath came in to replace her. Horvath was sacrificed to second by Christina Novak and reached third after tagging on a Kari Seddon fly out to left. Senior Stephanie Crews delivered an RBI single up the middle to get CMU within a run.
Calme later led the fourth inning off with a single and she went to second on a sacrifice before scoring on an RBI double by Seddon.
After CMU tied the score, BGSU made a pitching change bringing Hayley Wiemer in to try and shut the door on CMU. She threw the final three innings allowing just two hits while fanning five to earn the win (12-5).
DeRoche gave up two hits in the sixth, including an RBI double down the line in left that scored Dawnjene DeLong all the way from first. That gave DeRoche the loss as she fell to 3-5 on the season.
Calme was 2-for-3 while playing her final game at the CMU Softball Complex.
The Chippewas recognized their five seniors before the game Jacque Benedict, Calme, Stephanie Crews, DeRoche and Horvath.
Next up for CMU is a single game at Michigan State on Wednesday, April 25. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
