OXFORD, Ohio Freshman Jill Schulz broke up a no-hitter in the sixth inning and Jacque Benedict delivered a three-run double later in the frame as Central Michigan University earned a doubleheader split at Miami on Friday with a 4-1 win in the nightcap. The Chippewas fell in the opener by a 3-1 count.
CMU (19-18, 6-6 Mid-American) combined for just seven hits in the doubleheader but two of them were homers and one of them was Benedict’s timely gapper in the nightcap.
“When Miami pitched around Amy Hudson to get to Jacque Benedict in the sixth inning, Jacque got fired up,” coach Margo Jonker said. “She got the job done with a big hit, just like you expect a senior to do.
“Our offense was pretty stagnant today and we weren’t making adjustments. Instead, we were just getting frustrated.”
CMU now heads to Ball State (20-30, 6-10 Mid-American) for single games on Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Cardinals were swept by Eastern Michigan on Friday.
Miami 3, Central Michigan 1
A two-run homer by Miami’s Alicia Hogl sparked the RedHawks to a 3-1 victory in the opener on Friday.
Miami added another run in the third inning to stake a 3-0 lead and that’s all starter Meredith Linch (10-17) would need as she tossed a complete-game three hitter.
CMU’s lone run was a fourth-inning solo homer by Amy Hudson, her third of the season. Jacque Benedict and Suzie Giroux were the only other Chippewas to record hits as they both had singles.
Pettit took the loss going the first two innings and surrendering three runs (two earned) on three hits. Jill DeRoche gave up just one hit in four innings of relief while fanning five.
“Miami got the hits early and it proved to be too much to overcome,” Jonker said. “Jill came in and pitched very well in relief. She was definitely on her game at the end.”
Central Michigan 4, Miami 1
Miami pitcher Shalise Lugo took a no-hitter into the sixth inning but Chippewa freshman Jill Schulz broke it up with a one-out single. Following a fielder’s choice and back-to-back walks to load the bases, senior Jacque Benedict delivered a two-out, three-run double off the wall in right field.
CMU then added another run in the top of the seventh with a solo homer by Stephanie Crews as the Chippewas posted a 4-1 come-from-behind victory.
Kari Seddon (4-5) went the distance to earn the win, scattering five hits and allowing the RedHawks’ only run in the fourth inning. She struck out four and walked three.
“Seddon pitched an outstanding game and she got stronger as it went along,” Jonker said. “It was the best she has looked since our Florida trip.
“We got some key defensive plays as Amy Hudson and Stephanie Crews both made diving plays in the hole and got the runner out at first. Those kept us in the game.”
Lynsey VanSweden recorded CMU’s only other hit.
The Chippewa win snapped a season-best seven-game winning streak for Miami. Lugo took the loss and dropped to 7-6 on the year. She fanned four and walked three while giving up three hits. Meredith Linch closed the final two outs and gave up one hit.
