MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University wrapped up its third week of spring football practice with a two-hour workout at the Indoor Athletic Complex.
Weather conditions more reminiscent of January than April forced the practice session indoors. Thursday’s practice was the last before a four-day break for the Easter weekend.
“I didn’t think our concentration level was where it needed to be all day today,” said head coach Butch Jones. “We showed some spurts on both offense and defense, but there wasn’t a level of consistency that we need. That is something we need to continue to work toward.”
With nine of the 15 allowed spring practice dates in the books, the Chippewas are just past the midpoint of spring workouts. Considering the calendar, and the weather conditions the team has dealt with, Jones is happy to have the extended holiday break fall on the upcoming weekend.
“It’s good because of the weather situation,” Jones said. “I want to get outside and be able to practice outside. Being inside is fine, but you do get a little confined in terms of space and being able to throw the deep ball. I’d really like to be able to get out on the great playing surface we have in the stadium.
“I think it’s a good mental break too,” he added. “It gives our guys a chance to get away for a couple of days and relax before coming back and finishing camp strong.”
Jones and his staff have spent a good portion of the spring evaluating the returning personnel and installing new offensive and defensive schemes. That evaluation process will continue through the rest of spring drills.
“It’s hard to assess not really knowing what to expect going in,” Jones said. “I’m still disappointed in our running game, but I think we are getting better and will continue to improve there. We need to keep exposing our kids to situational football and all the different situations they are going to face during a game and a season.
“Right now we have 14 kids out of practice,” he continued. “A lot of younger players are getting a lot of reps, and that is something that is going to pay dividends for us down the road.”
