AKRON, Ohio Freshman Kari Seddon fired a two-hitter as Central Michigan University shut out the Akron Zips for the second straight day.CMU earned a 2-0 win on Sunday, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning for the only offense of the day.
With the win, the Chippewas finished the regular season 24-19 overall, 11-7 in the Mid-American Conference. CMU is the No. 5 seed in the eight-team MAC Tournament which begins Wednesday in Midland, Mich. The Chippewas will meet No. 4 Miami in a first-round game at 5 p.m. After Ali Pettit held the Zips to just three hits in an 8-0 blanking on Saturday, Seddon handcuffed Akron on Sunday allowing just a first-inning bunt single and a seventh-inning single. She fanned four and walked one. “We had some awesome defensive plays and Seddon pitched a great game,” coach Margo Jonker said. “She pitched especially well in the first six innings ... she was untouchable. Good defense and solid pitching is what top-notch softball is all about and we played that today.” CMU had six hits in the game and was aided by a pair of Zip errors. The Chippewas broke a scoreless game in the top of the fifth when a dropped foul ball extended Jill Schulz’ at-bat. She would then single and Amber Olejniczak was called on to pinch run. Olejniczak was sacrificed to second and a Tracy Kaatz single moved her to third. Kaatz stole second putting runners at second and third with one out. Christina Novak had a pinch hit sac fly to score the first run and Amy Hudson followed with an RBI single. “The wind played a big factor today,” Jonker said. “It was blowing in and some of our long flies got held up in the wind.” Kaatz and Hudson both had a pair of hits and Stephanie Crews also added a single. Seeding for the MAC Tournament is as follows: No. 1 Kent State, No. 2 Eastern Michigan, No. 3 Bowling Green, No. 4 Miami, No. 5 Central Michigan, No. 6 Western Michigan, No. 7 Ohio, and No. 8 Northern Illinois.
