MOUNT PLEASANT -- Installation has begun on Central Michigan University's new state-of-the-art video scoreboard systems for both Kelly/Shorts Stadium and Rose Arena.
The $2.5 million project was made possible by sponsorships from 11 corporations with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and the Soaring Eagle Resort serving as the founding partners.
"This scoreboard project is a huge step forward as we continue to field championship-caliber programs," Athletics Director Dave Heeke said. "We are grateful for the continued support of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and fortunate to have such special relationships with all our partners."
The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe contributed $1 million toward the project. Other sponsors include: Central Michigan Community Hospital, Meijer, CMU Bookstore, Greenstone Farm Credit Services, Pepsi, NuUnion Credit Union, Swaffer's Automotive Group, Lansing Capital City Airport and the CMU Alumni Association.
The scoreboards are being built and installed by Daktronics, the world's leading manufacturer of scoreboards and video displays. The new systems will replace and enhance the scoring units that were in Kelly/Shorts Stadium and Rose Arena.
"This has been a very exciting project to work on over the last 18 months," said Associate Athletics Director Nick Williams. "We received great support for this project from our 11 corporate partners and they really stepped up their involvement with CMU Athletics to make the new scoreboards and video displays possible.
"The video displays will exponentially enhance our game day atmosphere and create a whole new level of entertainment for our fans in both Kelly/Shorts Stadium and Rose Arena. Our fans will now be able to view replays, promotions and really have an active role in the scope of the game. CMU athletic events just became a lot more fun and interactive for the fans."
The primary scoreboard in Kelly/Shorts Stadium will be in the north endzone and will feature video display boards that face both into the stadium and also to the north. The structure will be placed north of the locker room complex and will stand 66 feet tall. The display boards themselves measure 16 feet high by 30 feet wide. A new auxiliary scoreboard will also be placed in the south endzone.
Rose Arena will also receive new 14x66 scoreboards with 9x12 video display units in each of the endzones. A new 30-foot scoring table will also have video capability.
Periodic photo updates will be posted on cmuchippewas.com as the project continues over the summer.
