Quoting Coach Jones
“I thought today was a very productive day and that we got a lot accomplished. We went in full pads this morning and then just in shells tonight to get ready for our scrimmage Wednesday morning. I think our guys are starting to understand what it takes to play at the level we want in our program. Our defense did a great job of running to the ball and finishing plays tonight, and on offense Dan LeFevour was accurate and threw the ball with good rhythm.”
Media Day Wednesday
CMU’s players and coaches will meet with the media during media day festivities Wednesday afternoon. Butch Jones will address the media during a press conference beginning at 3 p.m. Live video of the press conference will be available for free through the CMU Sports Zone on cmuchippewas.com.
LeFevour Leads the Way
One year ago, Dan LeFevour was in the midst of a three-way battle for the starting quarterback position. This August, he entered camp firmly entrenched as the team’s starter under center. Jones has been impressed by the maturity LeFevour has shown through the first 10 days of camp.
“He has been all business,” Jones said. “He has been very focused and has improved each day. He has shown more leadership and is focused on constantly getting better. He is always asking questions and trying to learn more about the offense. I really like his mentality right now.”
LeFevour and junior backup Brian Brunner give CMU arguably the best one-two combination at quarterback in the Mid-American Conference.
“Brian Brunner has improved greatly throughout camp,” Jones said. “I’m excited about what he’s done so far. We continue to get better and better at the quarterback position.”
Single Workout set for Wednesday
With media day slated for Wednesday afternoon, the Chippewas will practice just once Wednesday. The morning workout will primarily feature an offense-versus-defense scrimmage format.
“I am anxiously awaiting to see the level of intensity, physicality and focus we have Wednesday morning,” Jones said. “We want to see who will step up and make plays when the lights come on.”
The Next Level
CMU was represented well in last weekend’s NFL preseason games. Sixth-round draft pick Drew Mormino earned a start at left guard for the Miami Dolphins in their 18-17 win over Jacksonville. First-round pick Joe Staley did not start, but saw extensive action at right tackle in San Francisco’s 17-13 loss to Denver on Monday night. Also Monday night, free-agent signee Damien Linson caught two passes for 19 yards in Baltimore’s 29-3 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Coming Up
CMU will hold its third of five two-a-day sessions Thursday, with single practices scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The season opener at Kansas is just 17 days away.
