MOUNT PLEASANT Prior to the 2008 season, the Central Michigan football program forged a partnership with the 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry of the Michigan Army National Guard.
The team and members of the infantry deployed in Iraq kept in contact primarily through the exchange of videos, and each member of the football program has a sticker on his helmet displaying the infantry’s logo and motto, “Yield to None.”
Wednesday night, CMU will host Military Appreciation Night at Kelly/Shorts Stadium in conjunction with the Chippewas’ matchup with Ball State, and the families of the 125th Infantry members will be in attendance as guests of the program.
"It is an honor and a privilege for us to be associated with the 125th Infantry," said CMU head football coach Butch Jones. "Their battalion has been a source of pride and a great example of commitment for our football program. The relationship has benefited our program by heightening our players' awareness of current events and the daily struggles those individuals go through to protect our freedom."
Videos from the 125th Infantry will be played on the scoreboard throughout Wednesday night’s game. At halftime, a swearing in ceremony will take place on the field for new enlistees to the Michigan Army National Guard.
Also on Wednesday, all military members with an ID card (active, reserve, guard or retired) can show their ID at the gate and get a free ticket. All military dependents can get in for only $10 per person. Veterans, by showing their veterans organization card, and their families can also get into the game for $10.
The 125th Infantry is made up primarily of soldiers from Flint, Saginaw, Big Rapids, Wyoming and Bay City.
