MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University student-athletes put a great deal of time and effort into their respective sports, as well as into bettering the community.
CMU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was recently honored by the Volunteers Are Central recognition program which is sponsored by the CMU Volunteer Center. Each month, up to five awards are given to CMU students, faculty/staff, or departments/organizations.
"It is always great to get acknowledged by your peers and the university,” Assistant Athletics Director Jason Holtman said. “Our student-athletes do an outstanding job with community service, and the SAAC facilitates those efforts. Our commitment to community service is a reflection of the members of the SAAC, and the culture throughout the athletics department."
Nominations for the awards are accepted each month and a committee chooses the honorees.
The SAAC was selected for the award based on its efforts at the end of last sememster. The committee sponsored a Holiday Food Drive which benefited the Red Cross Food Pantry. The group organized the collection process as almost 300 CMU’s student-athletes collected canned and dry goods. Approximately 4,800 items were collected to assist those less fortunate in the area.
CMU’s SAAC also collected clothing that was distributed at Christmas Outreach.
While it was the SAAC that was honored, Chippewa student-athletes as a whole were involved in the projects sponsored by the group.
