MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University junior quarterback Dan LeFevour (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) has been named to the 2008 Maxwell Award watch list.
The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the outstanding collegiate football player in America. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was the recipient of the 2007 Maxwell Award.
LeFevour is one of 76 players named to the 2008 preseason watch list.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in early November and three finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 25. The winner of the 2008 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment in Atlantic City on March 6, 2009.
LeFevour posted one of the top statistical seasons in NCAA history in 2007. He passed for 3,652 yards and 27 touchdowns, rushed for 1,122 yards and 19 touchdowns and caught a 32-yard touchdown pass. LeFevour became just the second player in NCAA history to pass for 3,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in a season (Vince Young, Texas, 2005). He also joined 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tebow as the second player to throw at least 20 touchdown passes and score at least 20 touchdowns in a season.
A two-time All-Mid-American Conference first team selection, LeFevour was the conference’s offensive player of the year in 2007. He is the only quarterback in MAC history to lead his team to conference title as a freshman and a sophomore.
Entering his junior season, LeFevour holds CMU career records for passing yards (6,683), completions (602), touchdown passes (53) and total offense (8,326). He ranks seventh in school history in career rushing touchdowns (26).
LeFevour rushed for at least 100 yards four times in 2007, including a pair of 300-yard passing, 100-yard rushing efforts. He posted 500 yards of total offense in two different games: 514 yards in a 35-32 win at Akron (Nov. 23) and 506 yards in a 58-38 win at Ball State (Oct. 6).
LeFevour tied an all-bowl record with six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) in the Chippewas’ 51-48 loss to Purdue in the 2007 Motor City Bowl.
CMU opens the 2008 season at home against Eastern Illinois on Thursday, Aug. 28.
