MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University's football team took the field for its third practice of the 2008 season Monday afternoon. News and notes following Monday's practice session:
Quoting Coach Jones: "I was pleased with our effort today, but I was not happy with our execution. We made too many turnovers on offense and our defense was too inconsistent throughout the course of practice."
Quoting Coach Jones II: "Today was our first day in shoulder pads so you're going to have a little more contact. Right now we're just focusing on our overall fundamentals, making sure we're in the right body position to make tackles and finish blocks. The next phase is to take our fundamental work to the field when we're in a live situation. Football is a game played in pads, not shorts. We talk a lot about, who is going to stick their face in the fan? We'll find that out on Wednesday, and we'll find out which of our freshmen will step up and be physical."
Coming Up: The Chippewas will practice in helmets and shoulder pads again Tuesday afternoon before suiting up in full pads for the first time Wednesday. The preseason's first two-a-day session is slated for Thursday.
Fresh Faces: Three additional walk-ons have joined the Chippewas in camp: WR Hannibal Beauford (Miami Norland HS), QB Kent Viening (Grand Haven HS), OL Nick Reynolds (Kalamazoo Central HS) and WR Reggie Brown (Flint Northern HS).
Media Guide Now Available: CMU's 2008 football media guide is now available online in .pdf format. The CMU Sports Information office also has a limited number of guides available for purchase. Cost is $15 per copy. To purchase a media guide, send a check made out to Central Michigan University to: CMU Sports Information, 106 West Hall, Mount Pleasant, MI 48859. Those interested in purchasing a guide can also visit the sports information office and pay either cash or check.
Georgia Ranked No. 1: CMU's week two opponent, Georgia, has been ranked No. 1 in the preseason ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. If the Bulldogs are still ranked No. 1 when CMU visits Athens on Sept. 6, it would mark just the second time the Chippewas have faced a team ranked No. 1 in the country.
Counting Down: CMU's 2008 season opener against Eastern Illinois is now less than 24 days away.
