CMU vs. Buffalo Sept. 27, 2008
Sophomore linebacker Matt Berning made his first career start against Buffalo.
Andrew Hartline made his 44th consecutive start, tied for the longest streak in the country.
Dan LeFevour’s first completion of the game to Antonio Brown was the 700th completion of his career.
Justin Hoskins’ fumble in the third quarter was CMU’s first lost fumble of the 2008 season. Entering Saturday’s game, the Chippewas were one of eight Bowl Subdivision teams to have not lost a fumble.
Junior defensive end Sam Williams recorded 2.5 sacks in the game, setting a career high. He had two career sacks in 16 games before today’s performance.
Quarterback Dan LeFevour reached the century mark in rushing for the second week in a row, gaining 100 yards on 16 carries against Buffalos after totaling 112 yards rushing last week against Purdue. LeFevour has notched both of CMU’s 100-yard rushing games this season.
LeFevour finished the game 21-of-26 passing for a .808 completion percentage, the third-most efficient throwing performance of his career. He hit on 14-of-16 (.875 completion rate) in a 55-28 win at Buffalo in 2006, and went 18-of-22 (.818 completion rate) in a 42-26 win at Temple in 2006.
For the first time in its last 26 games, the winning team in CMU’s game failed to score 30 points. The last time CMU was involved in a game with a winning score of less than 30 points was an 18-7 CMU win over Ball State on October 14, 2006.
Senior running back Ontario Sneed rushed for a pair of touchdowns, the second time this season and fifth time in his career he has notched multiple rushing TD’s in a game. It’s the 10th time he’s had multiple TD’s of any kind (rushing or receiving) in a game.
Sneed finished with 77 yards rushing in the game, moving past the 2,500-yard mark for his career. He now has 2,523 rushing yards in his career.
The Chippewa offense put together its longest scoring march of the season, both in number of plays and time of possession, to produce its only first half points. CMU went a season-best 16 plays and took 7:03 off the clock to produce a 31-yard Andrew Aguila field goal.
Aguila made two field goals against Buffalo, the first time this season he’s knocked through multiple field goals in a game. It’s the fourth time in his career he’s connected on two field goals in a contest.
CMU trailed at halftime for the third time this season. It has come from behind in two of those games to win.
Today’s win over Buffalo was CMU’s 12th consecutive victory against an opponent from the MAC East Division, including wins in each of the last two MAC Championship games. The last East Division team to beat CMU was Buffalo, 36-6, on November 13, 2004.
This was Buffalo’s first-ever trip to Kelly/Shorts Stadium, despite having been in the MAC since 1998. The teams’ previous four meetings were all at Buffalo.
Antonio Brown caught nine passes to move into seventh on CMU’s career receptions list. He now has 132 career receptions. He passed Matt Means (130 receptions, 1972-74).
