LOGAN, Utah A strong start and finish helped the Central Michigan University pick up a road victory over Utah State on Friday evening, 193.025-190.800.
The Chippewas move to 2-0 on the season while Utah State falls to 0-2.
The Chippewas began the night on bars and scored a 48.775 to take an early lead. After a 47.600 on vault and a 47.875 on floor, CMU secured the victory with another 48.775 on beam.
“We focused all week in practice on bar and beam, and it was great to see it pay off today,” CMU head coach Jerry Reighard said. “The confidence that this team is beginning to show is a main reason for our success. I also thought that our upperclassmen really stepped up night and led us in our first road meet. This is a good start to the season and we want to continue to build off it.”
Katie Simon again led the Chippewas with three event victories for the second-straight week. Simon won vault (9.825), floor (9.800) and the all-around (39.100). She also took second on bars with a 9.800 and scored a 9.675 on beam.
“Katie’s success is a direct product of how hard she practices,” Reighard said. “She works so hard and I am thrilled to see that hard work pay off. She sets a great example for the rest of the team and I think the other gymnasts are beginning to see how important it is to work hard every day in practice.”
Jessica Suder was the other event winner for the Chippewas with a 9.875 on beam. Vanessa Rodriguez tied Simon for second on bars, Kristin Teubner took second on beam (9.800) and Jessica Neel finished second in the all-around (38.750).
The Chippewas are in the mist of a five-straight road meets and travel to Western Michigan next Sunday, Jan. 25. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
