MOUNT PLEASANT - Rivalry weekend is nearly here.
Central Michigan visits archrival Western Michigan Saturday afternoon with the Victory Cannon on the line. FSN Detroit Plus will televise the game live at 3:30 p.m., with ESPN GamePlan distributing the contest nationally on a pay-per-view basis.
The Victory Cannon is in its second season as the official trophy of the Central-Western rivalry. The Student Government Associations at CMU and WMU collaborated on the creation of the trophy, which is symbolic of the cannon fired at both CMU's Kelly/Shorts Stadium and WMU's Waldo Stadium.
This year's edition of the Central-Western rivalry features two offenses that combined to score 114 points in victories last week. Western Michigan improved to 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play with a 58-26 win at Toledo, while CMU extended its winning streak to five games with a 56-8 Homecoming win over Eastern Michigan.
On opposite sides of the field Saturday will be a pair of senior quarterbacks in CMU's Dan LeFevour and the Broncos' Tim Hiller, both of whom rank in the top five in MAC history in touchdown passes. Hiller is tied for third with 87 career scoring throws, while LeFevour is fifth with 86. They combined to account for nine total touchdowns last weekend, with LeFevour passing and rushing for three each and Hiller tossing three touchdown passes.
The Chippewas have won three straight meetings in the series for the first time since 1989-91. A win Saturday would give CMU its first four-game winning streak over the Broncos since 1984-87.
The series is deadlocked at seven wins apiece over the past 14 seasons. Home field has been key in the rivalry, with the host winning 16 of the last 19 meetings.
Last season in Mount Pleasant, Brian Brunner threw for 346 yards and a touchdown in just his third career start to lead the Chippewas to a 38-28 win. Bryan Schroeder added 106 yards on the ground and a score in his first career start. HIller, meanwhile, threw for a stadium-record 471 yards and two touchdowns.
Saturday's game opens a three-game road trip to close the month of October for the Chippewas. CMU visits Bowling Green next Saturday, then steps out of conference for a road date at Boston College on Oct. 31.
