MUNCIE, Ind. — Melinda Curran and Kahla Schwall combined for six saves and four different players on the Central Michigan field hockey team tallied goals as the Chippewas shut out Ball State, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.
The four goals matches CMU’s (4-9, 2-4 Mid-American) season high, which was set in its previous meeting against Ball State on Sept. 26.
“We played a good all around game today,” head coach Cristy Freese said. “I thought we did a better job defensively against Ball State than we did in our last match against them. We needed this win today.”
The Maroon and Gold got on the board just 7:45 into the contest when Brooke Sihota tipped Tara Schiltz’ shot into the goal to make it a 1-0 match. The tally was Sihota’s third of the season.
Schiltz put the Chippewas up a pair in the 29th minute with her first goal of the season, converting off a Kelly Jordan pass to give CMU a 2-0 lead at the break.
“We were very consistent offensively today,” Freese said. “We changed some things with our lineup and it got results. Tara had a big first half and her goal came off good execution on a penalty corner. Offensively, we were very crisp the entire match.”
Jordan wasn’t finished creating offense for her teammates as she found Lauren Leed in front of the goal for a tip-in goal in the 45th minute to give Central a commanding, 3-0, lead.
Erin Dye capped the scoring with her second goal of the season in the 51st minute.
Curran made her 13th straight start in goal this season and turned aside all five shots she faced before giving way to Schwall, who made one save in 9:32 of action to preserve the shutout.
The Chippewas stay in Muncie, Ind., for a neutral site contest against Longwood on Saturday. The match starts at 2 p.m.
