MOUNT PLEASANT — Pam Seufert’s second-half goal lifted the Central Michigan field hockey team over Michigan in a defensive oriented 1-0 victory at the CMU Field Hockey Complex on Wednesday.
The win snaps CMU’s (5-12, 2-6 Mid-American) three-match losing skid and gives the Chippewas’ their first victory over the Wolverines since 1988. The shutout is Central’s third clean sheet this season.
“It was nice to be able to rebound and totally shut a team out,” head coach Cristy Freese said. “This was a great team effort and we needed it to beat a team like Michigan today.”
Both teams struggled on the attack in the early going as CMU and UM recorded only two shots apiece in the first 16 minutes.
The Wolverines closed the first half strong, firing the final six shots of the first half. Despite an 8-2 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners in the opening frame, UM could not solve Melinda Curran as the score remained 0-0 at the break.
CMU came out strong in the second half, possessing the ball deep in UM territory for most of the final 35 minutes and outshooting Michigan, 5-4, while holding a decisive 6-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Seufert finally found the back of the net with 14:32 remaining when she pounced on a rebound buried a shot for her fourth goal of the season.
The Maroon and Gold defense was able to play keep the ball from Michigan and kill 10 minutes off the clock. However, Michigan turned up the pressure and pinned Central in its own end for the majority of the final four minutes. The Wolverines got a penalty corner with just under two minutes remaining, but the Chippewa defense was able to clear the ball away and secure the victory.
Michigan outshot Central, 12-7, in the contest, but CMU held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Curran was stellar in goal, stopping all seven shots she faced to record the shutout.
“Mel played great today to help us get the win,” Freese said. “It is nice to play well especially after last weekend. Hopefully the win today can give us confidence going into the weekend.”
The Chippewas resume their homestand on Saturday when they host MAC foe Missouri State at 1 p.m.
