MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - More than 5,000 canned goods and non-perishable food items were collected by Central Michigan University student-athletes Sunday who participated in the Red Cross Holiday Food Drive.
Nearly 300 student-athletes canvassed Mount Pleasant neighborhoods during the annual event, which is organized by members of the CMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
“The event is designed to have student-athletes from all teams come together for a community service opportunity,” explained Greg Pilling, President of the SAAC. “Thanks to the great support of the community members, we were able to help re-stock the Isabella County Food Pantry.”
“This is always a great event for our student-athletes and the community,” said Jason Holtman, Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development. “Our student-athletes are like everyone else with busy schedules and everyday responsibilities, but this year was more important than ever for them to make a sacrifice considering the economic sacrifices people in our own backyard are forced to make every day.”
The women’s track and cross country team collected more items (1,240) than any other team, while the men’s track and cross country team finished second with 948 canned goods. Sport teams were divided into groups, and the top three groups all came from the track and cross country programs as well. The winning group, which collected 225 items, consisted of Katie Christenson, Staphanie Byrne, Misha Lamphere, Kelsey Beatty, and Mykal Dixon.
The 5,020 items collected bettered last year’s total by more than 500.
