BUFFALO, N.Y. – The two programs that have combined to win the last three Mid-American Conference championships collide Saturday afternoon when Central Michigan meets Buffalo at UB Stadium.
The Chippewas and Bulls enter the weekend from opposite directions. CMU (3-1 overall, 1-0 MAC) is riding a three-game riding streak, while Buffalo (1-3, 0-1 MAC) has dropped three straight after a season-opening win at UTEP. A win would lift CMU to its first 4-1 start to a season since 1988.
CMU’s offense has put 48 points on the scoreboard each of the last two weeks, just the second time in program history the Chippewas have scored that many points in consecutive games. CMU has scored 131 points in the season’s first four games combined, the most since 1996.
The Chippewa defense has been equally as effective and enters the weekend first in the MAC in scoring defense (16.8 ppg allowed) and total defense (274.0 ypg allowed). The 67 points CMU has allowed through four games are the fewest since 1992.
Buffalo turned the ball over five times in a 37-13 loss at Temple last weekend. The defense limited Temple to 293 total yards, but the Owls returned both a kickoff and an interception for touchdowns.
Saturday’s game features two of the top active receivers in college football in CMU’s Bryan Anderson and Buffalo’s Naaman Roosevelt. Anderson has caught at least one pass in 44 consecutive games, while Roosevelt has caught a pass in 42 straight games.
Among active Bowl Subdivision receivers, Anderson ranks second in career receptions (239) and receiving yards (3,033). Roosevelt is third in receptions (226) and second in yards (3,042).
Saturday’s game will be streamed live through the CMU Sports Zone at cmuchippewas.com. Subscription rates apply. The CMU Sports Network radio broadcast of the game will be streamed for free through cmuchippewas.com. The CMU Sports Network pregame show begins at 2:30 p.m.
CMU hosts Eastern Michigan at noon next Saturday on Homecoming Weekend in Mount Pleasant. Kickoff is set for noon. The Chippewas close the month of October with consecutive road games at Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Boston College.
