MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan was forced to come from behind, but turnovers were turned into points for the Chippewas, who scored 49 unanswered points to defeat Toledo, 56-28.
The Rockets (4-6, 2-4 MAC) took just eight plays to score on the opening possession and added a second touchdown on the first play of the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead and hand the Chippewas (8-2, 6-0 MAC) their first deficit in a Mid-American Conference game this season. The Chippewas, however, responded by generating five turnovers while quarterback Dan LeFevour was responsible for six touchdowns en route to setting the school's all-time rushing touchdowns record.
LeFevour ran in from two yards to tie the game at 14 after one possession in the second quarter, and a Dannie Bolden interception three plays later gave the Chippewas the ball at Toledo's 27-yard line. LeFevour rushed two yards again, this time on fourth-and-one, to cap a 7-play scoring drive that gave Central the go-ahead touchdown. While LeFevour was racing toward his total of four rushing touchdowns, he completed 17 of his first 18 passes, including 16 in a row after his first attempt was incomplete.
Bryan Schroeder added a four-yard rushing touchdown with 2:33 left in the half, and Nick Bellore's interception at the 1:20 mark gave the Chippewas an extra chance, starting at their own 23-yard line. Unable to gain a first down after a 20-yard completion to Schroeder on the first play of the drive, Central returned the ball to Toledo with just under a minute left. Matt Berning, however, forced a fumble on the Rockets' first play and Frank Zombo's recovery gave the Chippewas one more first-half opportunity, this time at Toledo's 22-yard line. The Chippewas capitalized with another two-yard touchdown run by LeFevour to take a 35-14 lead into halftime.
The Chippewas added touchdowns on a two-yard run by LeFevour and a 42-yard pass from LeFevour to Antonio Brown in the third quarter to go up 49-14, and scored their final touchdown on a six-yard run by Schroeder early in the fourth. The scoring play was set up by his own 52-yard run at the end of the third that helped him to his second career 100-yard game. The Rockets added a pair of fourth-quarter scores with under 10 minutes remaining.
LeFevour surpassed Curtis Adams (1981-84) to set the Central Michigan career rushing touchdown mark at 45. In the air tonight, LeFevour was 29-of-36 for 341 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Schroeder finished with 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, while Brown caught 13 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.
The Chippewas out-gained the Rockets, 507 yards to 353, and allowed just 103 yards in the second and third quarters combined.
