MUNCIE, Ind. — The Central Michigan field hockey team fought back to tie its Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal match with Ohio in the second half, but a late OU tally gave CMU a 2-1 loss to end its 2009 season.
The Chippewas finish the year 8-13, 4-6 in MAC play.
Ohio dominated the first half, outshooting Central, 7-2, and holding a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners.
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Marcy Dull scored from eight yards out to put OU up, 1-0. Cathryn Altdoerffer assisted on the play as OU took a one-goal lead into the break.
Central came out strong in the second half, taking an early shot and keeping Ohio away from the attacking circle. Lauren Leed got the Maroon and Gold on the board in the 52nd minute when she tapped in a rebound off a penalty corner to tie the match at one apiece.
“We executed our penalty corner well on that goal,” head coach Cristy Freese said. “Lauren was able to play a rebound off of Kelly Jordan’s shot and put us back in the match.”
The Bobcats responded with a flurry on the offensive end and earned three straight penalty corners following the Chippewas’ tally. OU retook the lead, 2-1, with 6:57 remaining when Paige Herr tapped in a rebound.
CMU mustered another surge late as Tara Schiltz fired a pair of shots in the final three minutes, but could not find the equalizer.
Ohio finished the contest with a 14-7 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners. Friday’s match was the 15th time in 21 outings that CMU allowed two goals or less.
“I thought we played well today,” Freese said. “It was a tough semifinal match, but we did a nice job regrouping at halftime. We gave up too many corners at the end of the second half and that hurt us. It is a disappointing result, but I am happy with how the team played the last couple weeks and how they competed today against Ohio.”
Melinda Curran earned the nod in goal for the Chippewas and turned aside eight of the 10 shots she faced. She finishes her senior season with a 1.92 goals against average, .769 save percentage and two shutouts.
