LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Home runs were the theme again in Central Michigan University's second game at the season-opening Troy Cox Classic at New Mexico State on Friday.
The host Aggies posted an 11-4 victory over the Chippewas as the two teams blasted a pair of home runs each. Central fell to UTEP, 3-1 in eight innings, earlier in the day with a pair of homers accounting for the Miners' three runs.
NMSU used a two-run shot in the first frame and a grand slam in the second to jump out to an 11-1 lead.
CMU junior Christina Novak blasted a two-run homer in the third and junior Jill Schulz added a solo shot in the fourth to cut into NMSU's sizable cushion but the Chippewas never put a runner in scoring position after that.
New Mexico State (8-1) suffered its first loss of the season just before taking the field against CMU. The Aggies are receiving votes in both national polls.
Sophomore Kim Campbell (0-1) took the loss for Central going one and a third innings allowing seven hits and seven runs, all earned. Katie Greenman made her first collegiate pitching appearance with four and two-thirds innings of relief work. She gave up six hits and four runs while fanning two and walking six. Greenman played infield for the Chippewas the last two seasons but injuries to a pair of pitchers has CMU looking for others to step in the circle.
New Mexico State finished the game with 13 hits while CMU tallied six. Six of the Aggies' went for extra bases.
Tracy Kaatz and Schulz both had a pair of hits for CMU.
CMU is set to play two games on Saturday, facing UTEP for the second time in as many days at 11:30 a.m. MST, and then St. Mary's at 7 p.m. MST.
