MOUNT PLEASANT The Central Michigan softball team got swept by Miami to conclude the first weekend of its Mid-American Conference schedule.
RedHawks’ freshman pitcher Jessica Simpson one hit the Chippewas in a 2-0 MU win in the opener and a seven-run seventh inning gave Miami the sweep with an 8-1 victory.
The series was originally going to be played with single games on Saturday and Sunday, but was moved to a doubleheader with inclement weather in the Sunday forecast.
The Chippewas drop to 7-14 this season, 1-3 in MAC play.
Game One
A pair of early runs was all the RedHawks needed to take the opening game of the doubleheader, 2-0, over the Chippewas.
Jordan McElroy singled on the first pitch of the afternoon and came around to score on a Meghan Mawn RBI double. Mawn scored on a sacrifice fly later in the inning to put Miami up 2-0 early.
Simpson took over from there, retiring the first nine batters she faced until Kim Cozat reached on an error to start the fourth inning. Brittini Merchant recorded CMU’s lone hit of the afternoon with a single in the fifth inning.
Simpson struck out eight Chippewas and walked only one in the complete game victory.
Ali Pettit made her third start in the last two days and went the distance again. Pettit scattered eight hits and three walks while striking out five batters in her seven innings of work. The loss drops her record to 5-8.
Game Two
A seven-run seventh inning snapped a 1-1 tie to give Miami a sweep of the doubleheader.
The RedHawks drew first blood in the second inning on an RBI single by Kathryn Russette to go ahead 1-0.
The score remained that way despite the scoring opportunities that the Chippewas created. CMU loaded the bases with one out after drawing three walks, but failed to capitalize as Jill Schulz and Amanda Klosterman were both retired to strand all three runners.
Christina Novak began a scoring threat in the fourth with a leadoff double, but never advanced any further. Jessica Simpson relieved starter Meredith Linch and promptly retired the side with a strikeout and a fly ball double play in which Novak got gunned out at third.
CMU finally tied the game in the fifth when Katie Greenman singled home Amanda Patrick from third base.
The game was still 1-1 in the top of the seventh when a combination of Miami hitting and Central Michigan errors broke the game open. The RedHawks started the inning with two straight singles. After Kim Campbell retired the next batter, a single loaded the bases with one out. Campbell walked Jordan McElroy to force in a run and make it 2-1. Ali Pettit relieved Campbell but was unable to control the damage. She walked her first hitter on four pitches and allowed a bases clearing single that was followed by a Katie Greenman error in right. Miami scored two more runs on a double and another error to cap the scoring.
Campbell took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season, she allowed five runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. She also struck out five batters while walking three.
The Chippewas complete their six-game home stand on Wednesday when they host Oakland in a doubleheader. The first game starts at 2 p.m.
