MOUNT PLEASANT Former Central Michigan University quarterback Brian Brunner and offensive lineman Andrew Hartline have been selected as members of the 2009 National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.
CMU was the only member of the Mid-American Conference, and one of just 28 Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) members, to have multiple individuals selected to the honor society.
A total of 564 players from 266 schools across all classifications qualified for membership in the society's third year, a 27 percent increase from the 2008 class. In its inaugural year in 2007, the Hampshire Honor Society honored over 300 students from 195 schools.
In order to earn membership in the honor society, individuals must be a starter or significant contributor in their final year of eligibility, achieve a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2 and meet all NCAA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.
Brunner (Hubertus, Wis./Hartford Union HS) carries a 3.90 grade-point average as a journalism major. A three-year letterman, Brunner was elected a co-captain in 2008. He was a two-time Academic All-MAC selection and the 2008 recipient of CMU’s Boyden Award, which is presented to a student-athlete who excels athletically, academically and in the community.
Brunner made two starts under center in 2008 and earned national recognition following both. He was recognized with one of ESPN’s “Helmet Sticker” awards after completing 20-of-28 passes for 346 yards and a touchdown in a 38-28 win over Western Michigan on Oct. 18.
Brunner completed 35-of-53 passes for a school-record 485 yards and four scores and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run in a 37-34 win at Indiana on Nov. 1. He was named the Walter Camp Foundation’s National Offensive Player of the Week following that performance.
Hartline (Baroda, Mich./Stevensville Lakeshore HS) earned his bachelor’s degree in December 2008. He had maintained a 3.29 GPA as an economics major. Hartline started 52 consecutive games for CMU, tied for the second-longest streak in NCAA history. He was elected a team co-captain in 2008.
Hartline was an All-MAC first team selection in 2008 after earning second team accolades in 2006 and 2007. He was a two-time academic all-conference selection.
Brunner and Hartline join 2008 inductees Red Keith, Tony Mikulec and Eric Tunney and 2007 inductee Dan Bazuin as former Chippewas in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society.
