DEKALB, Ill. The Central Michigan softball team was shutout 3-0 in both games of a doubleheader against Northern Illinois at Mary M. Bell Field on Friday.
The losses drop the Chippewas to 9-28, 1-14 in the Mid-American Conference.
Ali Pettit got the start in both games and struck out a combined six batters to pass Jessica Garvin for fourth on CMU’s career list.
Game One
The Huskies struck with three unearned runs in the first inning and NIU pitching held CMU to four hits in the first game of the Friday double dip.
A two-out Chippewa miscue allowed Huskies’ leadoff batter Zoe Sinner to come around and open the scoring. Emily Gooding followed the play up by belting a two-run homer to make it a 3-0 ballgame after one.
The Maroon and Gold had a few opportunities to climb closer in the contest. Molly Coldren singled and stole second base with two down in the second but did not advance. The Chippewas started another rally in the third when Ashley Gilson singled with one out and Amber Olejniczak reached on an error with two down. After a passed ball put runners and second and third, NIU starting pitcher Morgan Bittner ended the threat by inducing an inning-ending groundout.
Coldren was Central’s top performer in game one, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base and a walk.
Pettit went the distance and allowed three unearned runs on three hits while walking two and fanning four batters in her six innings of work.
Game Two
Northern Illinois took another early lead and worked in and out of trouble in the circle to complete the sweep with another 3-0 win in the nightcap.
The Huskies loaded the bases with one out in the first and took the early lead when Emily Gooding walked to force in a run to make it 1-0.
Molly Coldren continued her hot hitting with a double to lead off the second to try and rally the Chippewas. She advanced to third on a two-out single by Jill Schulz, but Huskies’ starter Andrea Colosimo got out of the jam by forcing a popup to end the frame.
CMU threatened to tie the game again in the third when Tracy Kaatz singled and stole second with two outs. She advanced to third on a single by Katie Greenman, but Colosimo was once again able to get out of trouble with a groundout that ended the rally.
NIU plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third. A Chippewa miscue put runners at first and second with only one out. After the next batter popped up for the second out of the frame, Dani Parrish delivered an RBI single to make it a 2-0 ball game. The Huskies extended the lead to 3-0 when Bailey Oulette stole home as part of a double steal.
Central threatened once again in the fourth as Brittini Merchant and Kim Cozat began the inning with consecutive hits and a two-out walk by Ashley Gilson loaded the bases before Colosimo once again wiggled off the hook by forcing a groundout.
CMU put two runners aboard again in the sixth inning when Schulz doubled and Amanda Klosterman walked with one out, but Huskies’ reliever Morgan Bittner kept the Chippewas at bay once again.
The Chippewas had hits in all but one inning and finished with nine, but stranded 11 runners in their comeback attempt.
Pettit (6-21) allowed three runs (one earned) in six innings of work. The senior scattered seven hits and three walks while fanning two batters. She has allowed only six earned runs in her last six starts.
Central heads back to the state of Michigan for a two-game set against rival Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. Game one is at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
