MOUNT PLEASANT A late inning lead evaporated as the Central Michigan softball team suffered its seventh straight defeat, 7-2, at the hands of No. 8 Michigan 7-2 at Margo Jonker Stadium on Wednesday.
The Chippewas fall to 7-19 with the defeat and their losing streak is the longest in their 31 year history.
Central took advantage of a Michigan miscue to open the scoring. Molly Coldren reached on an error and stole second to lead off the inning. After advancing to third on a sacrifice, Katie Greenman drove Coldren in with a two-out RBI single to make it 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 through five innings as Ali Pettit held the Wolverines to three hits and walked only one while fanning three through five.
The Wolverines went in front in the sixth when Angela Findlay belted a two-run homer with one out to go up 2-1.
After Central went down in order in the bottom of the inning, Michigan broke the game open in the top of the seventh. The Wolverines opened up the inning with three straight hits to chase Pettit from the game and go ahead 3-1. Kim Campbell came in relief and gave up two run-scoring singles, the second of which scored two runs after a throwing error by Christina Novak. A sacrifice fly capped the inning to put Michigan up 7-1 after six and a half.
The Chippewas plated a run in the bottom of the frame when Amanda Patrick hit into a fielders choice with the bases loaded to score Kim Cozat and cap the scoring.
Pettit drops to 5-12 with the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in six innings of work. She also walked two and struck out four.
Central is off until Saturday when it takes on in-state rival Eastern Michigan to start a two-game series in Ypsilanti, Mich. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
